Public Lands Survey

The vast majority of slot canyons are located on lands managed by Federal agencies including the Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service, and National Park Service. These agencies are bound by a series of laws and management processes that formally recognize the right of recreational users to access and enjoy these lands. The focus of the Coalition of American Canyoneers is to advocate for your access to slot canyons on these lands. In the past, we’ve used established laws and processes to successfully engage Federal land managers on canyon closures and other access issues. However, the future relevance of those laws and processes is now in doubt.

Momentum is building to significantly change the way these lands are managed. Members of Congress have introduced bills to transfer management of Federal lands to States. It’s unclear if States will be required to allow recreational access. It’s also unclear if States will be able to sell these lands to private interests. This transition, if it actually occurs, may substantially change our access to slot canyons. We’re interested in your opinion on this matter.
