The Coalition of American Canyoneers is proud to have supported a recent rebolting project in California’s Sierra National Forest — Upper and Lower Jump Canyon!

CAC volunteers, board members, and local canyoneers joined Jump pioneer Paul Martzen, one of the canyons’ first descensionists, for a weekend focused on stewardship and longevity of this 5-star trade route. Together, the team improved access to existing anchors, evaluated damaged or aging bolts, and ultimately serviced more than 10 anchors — replacing 30+ year old bolts with modern, CAC-funded stainless steel hardware strategically placed in protected areas from Jump’s seasonal flooding. Additionally, numerous webbing-linked hangers were upgraded to unlinked, bolted configurations — further reducing the overall trash that accumulates in a canyon environment. These upgrades were done thoughtfully, while still maintaining the character and history of this historic descent.
Before & after

This is exactly the kind of work CAC exists to support: helping local canyon leaders preserve access and keep special places true to their roots, ensuring that future canyoneers are able to explore them as safely and responsibly as possible for years to come.

Is there a canyon in your area that could benefit from technical assistance, equipment, funding, consultation, or simply a few extra hands? We want to hear from you. Reach out to the Coalition of American Canyoneers and let us know how we can help.
