Each month, the Coalition of American Canyoneers hosts a live Zoom presentation for members, bringing in guest experts to dig into the gear, techniques, and issues that matter most to the canyoneering community. This month, we were joined by Jeff Lehman for a look at how satellites, cell sites, and PSAPs (Public Safety Answering Points) come together when a canyon emergency call needs to get through.

About This Session

Making a 911 call is usually the last thing on an adventurer’s mind. Jeff Lehman walked members through the hazardous environments and infrastructure gaps that complicate the rescue process, and the tools and techniques available to improve your chances of making a successful call for help — from satellite communicators to cell coverage quirks to how PSAPs handle a backcountry emergency once the call connects.
