International Canyon Accident Database (ICAD)

The Coalition of American Canyoneers (CAC) is pleased to announce the creation of the
International Canyon Accident Database (ICAD).

Canyoning has been a growing sport for many years worldwide. It is quite popular for tourists who utilize a one-time only guide service. It is also avidly followed by recreational canyoneers who spend most of their free time exploring canyons. It comes as no surprise that there are minor injuries such as a sprained ankle. However, it is unfortunate that serious fatal accidents also occur. The International Canyon Accident Database was created to understand and analyze causes of canyon related accidents, so they might be avoided in the future.

The CAC is seeking detailed narratives, personal analysis, and advice from individuals involved in canyon accidents.  In addition to an individual’s account, supporting evidence such as scene pictures, newspaper reports, official reports, and diagrams will be helpful.  The questionnaire is designed with two possibilities of anonymity: 1) published in full without omission of details (i.e. no anonymity); 2) published with participant names omitted (anonymous).

To submit a report to ICAD online, please follow this ICAD LINK

Finished reports from the ICAD will be published in English by the CAC periodically via electronic newsletter, on our website, and via print.
